Goulburn Valley Devils – Under 18 Lawn Bowls Squad

GV Devils

The Goulburn Valley Devils – Under 18 Lawn Bowls Squad have had a busy January on the bowls green.

The first weekend saw 13 juniors represent their clubs – Stanhope, East Shepparton, Hill Top and Kyabram in the Ted King tournament at Strathmerton.

Over 2 days the teams of 4 competed in 4s, triples, pairs and singles. Day 1 was shortened due to the warm weather then Sunday turned winterish and everyone was searching for jumpers.
With generous sponsorship ship from Moama Bowling club and the event run by Justine – Murray Kraze the kids performed well.  Josh Cartwright and Ben Fletcher were invited to play in the Bowls Vic development teams under the eye of designated coach David Cartwright and the remaining children played in a number of teams.
The fours team of Joshua Locke, Hayley Hancock, Jorja Ponton and Akasha Fortune won the biggest winning margin on Sunday, while Olivia Cartwright and her team of Emilee Davies, Jordyn Long and Olivia Slade finished runner up for the event.
The best sportsperson of the weekend was also rewarded; Charlie Boswood from Kyabram showed outstanding qualities to receive this award.

Training has then continued every Monday night throughout the holiday period in preparation for the Junior Provincial Championships – Flapper shield at Daylesford (most prestigious junior event in the State).
Whilst two of our juniors Olivia Cartwright (Hill Top) and Bailey Leask (East Shep) represented Victoria in the Under 18 team at Sth Australia – 11 other juniors held their heads high in their first time at this event.

The format of the day included playing 3 games of triples with a team of 9.  The GV took a team of 11 and rotated kids throughout the day.

Our first game was on a rather slow green against last years winners the Northern Flyers.

The teams consisted of:-

  • Josh Cartwright – Skip, Henry Boswood, Riley Locke
  • Jacob Cartwright – Skip, Charlie Boswood, Liam McInnes
  • Ben Fletcher – Skip, Jorja Ponton, Hayley Hancock
  • With Subs Josh Locke and Brayden Hall.

Unfortunately, this game got away from us and we went down on 2 rinks and Fletcher had a draw.
After lunch the team regrouped and moved onto a faster green against Central Highland Rangers.
Subs where swapped into play and all 3 rinks came away with wins. Jacob Cartwright, Charlie Boswood and Brayden Hall had the comeback of the day being down 1-10, turning it around to win 15 -12.
A short break then into the next game against Eastern Eagles.
After some close games we won all 3 again and waited on another result to see if we made the final.
It didn’t go our way and we finished 2nd in our section, not making it through to the final but what an awesome bunch of kids with some real heart and talent for the game of bowls.

Great friendships are being formed not only within the GV but all over Victoria.
It’s a delight to watch them grow and encourage each other throughout their bowls journey.

Well done GV devils looking forward to the future. Thanks to all our parents and supporters over this time.
